Do you have a loved one getting taken advantage of?

It’s devastating to realize at the end of a loved ones life that they’ve been taken advantage of. I was recently told of a relative living in another state, no kids. She was an independent woman in many ways until the very end. A younger man moved in next door a few years ago. He took her to appointments, called himself her son. Eventually, he took her to the lawyers office and changed her will and trust as well as made himself the POA. The family now has hit dead end after dead end because she was aware of the decisions she was making while signing the paperwork. She signed over millions of inheritance over to a neighbor that she knew for the few last years of her life, falsifying his identity as her son to the community and providers.

The family was involved but felt like she had a great “friend” taking her to appointments. They didn’t know the extent her new found, “fake son” had taken it.

With a service like ours, you can entrust, your loved one is being advocated for, you’re informed of what we do on a monthly basis, and we will never be the counterfeit to take advantage of an elder.

My parents are struggling at home, but refuse assistance. What do I do now?

Guiding Hands for Seniors is just as much here to support families as we are to support seniors. We will sit down with you and review where your struggling and how we can assist. A lot of times we can take the pressure off of the caregivers/loved ones just by sitting down and reviewing resources.

When you see the signs and they are not ready to accept help, call us. We can review approaches to discussions and provide tools to get you equipped for what you are facing ahead. 402-209-3638

How do we advocate?
Just recently I worked with a client that was told by a community that they would need to be moved to a semi private room while they received therapy because of insurance. Into further investigation I found that they charge the same for a private and a semi private room and it was not necessary to be moved. Upon Further investigation it was made known she hadn’t had therapy for 4 days because the community dropped the ball on re authorizing her therapy. They also did not provide her the option of appealing her private insurance company, didn’t provide her proper notice and did not have a discharge plan in place. When I asked what the plan for payment would be they assumed she would pay privately. I corrected them on the proper procedure on notifying someone when they would be charged privately, proper procedure on discharge planning, and proper procedure to ensure someone isn’t left in their room for 4 days without therapy. After speaking with insurance, administration, and clinicians, her stay was paid for.

If you know of someone that has aging parents, please let me advocate for them. My monthly fee is $75 a month but it can save someone a lot of money and grief in the long run.

Please call me at 4022093638 to set up a time to discuss my all encompassing services and advocacy business.

Thank you,

She’s the real deal folks, so take the time to give her a call!!!

We advocate for you!
This week we worked with a family that was told their insurance was denied. The community did not notify the family in a timely manner. They also did not offer to help with the appeal process. Guiding Hands took over and the loved one is getting the therapy they need.
Call us if you have questions about your rights. 4022093638. We will find you answers.

How do we advocate?
Last week we worked with a family that was told the only place for skilled nursing was at a place they did not want their loved one to go. They were told they needed to move out of the hospital that day. They were told the only bed available was where they were placed.
We worked with the community they wanted their loved one and the next day they were where they wanted to be to do their rehabilitation.
Let us help you. If you don’t like what you’re being told, we will find you answers.

Metaphorical Monday:

Let me tell you a story about an older gentlemen. He’s been independent and proud his entire life. He didn’t ask for help, he helped others. He is a very proud man and he has noticed that he has some signs of needing some things, however, he chose to walk alone. He took a walk outside and fell in a hole.

He didn’t want to ask for help so he spent hours tryin not to draw attention to himself while figuring out how to get out of this hole. He realized he would need to ask for help to get out. He called his friend over and they tried to get him out of the hole. The friend meant well, however, he was not skilled in this realm. The friend said I am going to call a doctor to get you out of the hole.

The doctor came. The gentlemen said, “well, I’m cold and I think I may have some pain. I hurt myself falling into this hole”. The doctor wrote him a script and said he would like to see him again in a few weeks.

The gentlemen was still in the hole when I walked by. I asked him if I could help him get out of that hole. He said, “yes, no one else is experienced in getting me out of this hole”. I jump in the hole with him. He yells, “What are you doing? I’ve been stuck in this hole, now you’re in here with me! How are we going to get out?” I say, “Don’t worry I know this hole. I’ve been here before and I know exactly how to get you out. Let me guide you.”

Call Guiding Hands for Senior Transitions at 402-209-3638 before you get stuck in the hole. There is no need in wasting time or energy in figuring out what we already know. We will save you the time and worry.

ARE YOU PREPARED TO CARE FOR YOUR LOVED ONE?

The first step is to be open-minded when it comes to their wishes. Designing a persons Life Plan is done by collecting facts from their past and present to prepare for the best and worse case scenarios of the future. This includes their beliefs, experiences, clinical diagnosis, and services needed now and later. Ensuring legal documents that are needed for hospital visits, nursing home visits, and understanding insurance coverage are readily available. Medicare/Medicaid/VA Benefits clarity are a necessity when navigating services.

Many loved ones aren't comfortable in asking difficult questions. Asking a person about their finances, decisions when facing a serious illness, who will be appointed to make those decisions, family conflicts, social networks, relationships and communication with physicians and other healthcare providers, services needed now and in the future can cause tension and needs preparation. As your Senior Transitions Guide, we can ease your fears and prepare for the future which will lead you to a peace of mind. Call us at 402-209-3638.

Stephanie Witt spent her childhood with her great-grandparents and grandparents any chance she could. After school, while most children were playing, she would go spend her afternoons at the retirement community volunteering. She became a Certified Nurses Aide while working her way through college where she earned her Masters Degree in Healthcare Management. She studied nursing courses and became a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator. For years she has worked as an Executive Director for Skilled Nursing Facilities, Assisted Livings, and Hospice Houses. She has worked with home health companies and knows what it means to care for your loved ones. Her grandmother was her best friend and for years she would travel to her grandmothers farm to clean her house, grocery shop, take her to doctors appointments, and in the end was by her side when she took her last breath. Her passion for a dignified life for the elders is why she decided it was time to set up a service for families and loved ones to support them through each phase of their life as she has for her own grandparents.

Her goal is prepare people for the best and worse case scenarios. When the unexpected happens, she is there for you as a resource to guide you through hospital stays, rehabilitation stays, home health services, maintaining their home, understanding Medicare and Medicaid, and anything else needed to ensure you are providing them the best life and most importantly, quality time.
